Man in court over exam candidate switch

A man has appeared in court charged with attempting to sit anexam for someone else at the University of Bath.

Neng Huang, 26, of Upper Shaftesbury Avenue in Southampton, wasarrested at the university's Claverton Down campus on Saturday.

It is alleged that he tried to sit an English language test onbehalf of someone else.

He appeared at Bath Magistrates' Court on Monday charged withthree counts of fraud by false representation and has been remandedin custody until a further hearing at Bristol Crown Court at the endof the month.

Huang did not enter a plea. A university spokeswoman said itwould be helping Avon and Somerset Police with their inquiries.

The exam was the International English Language Testing System,which is the most commonly used exam across the world to testEnglish proficiency.

The university is one of a number of certified test centresacross the UK and the test is jointly managed by the University ofCambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council and theInternational Development Program of Australian Universities andColleges.

The spokeswoman added that "rigorous checks are made to ensureany attempts at identity fraud are challenged."

Meanwhile, the university is also investigating an incident inwhich two students allegedly set up fake Twitter and Facebookaccounts to make disparaging comments about a lecturer.

The pair apparently targeted a pharmacy lecturer and used anofficial photograph from the university's website to pretend to beher on the internet and then used the sites to mock her character.

The university has declined to comment but the Chronicleunderstands that an investigation has been launched to look into theallegations.
