Vic: Monash wins China contract
China has called on the expertise of Victoria's Monash University with the award of
a $US1.5 million Asian Development Bank contract to help develop its western regions.
The project will run for eight months from January 2001 and will involve advising the
Chinese government on ways to enhance the economic development of Great Western China.
Monash vice-chancellor, Professor DAVID ROBINSON, says the joint bid by Monash International
Pty Ltd, the university's economics department and Egis Consulting Australia beat five
major American and European rivals.
He says the contract opens the door for Australia to other major projects in the export
of services.
The project's final report will deal with poverty, environmental degradation, energy
and infrastructure development.
The report will be reviewed at an international conference in the Sichuan city of Chengdu
next August.
